The Biggest Benefits of Drinking Water

5 Major Benefits of Drinking Water

    December 18, 2019 · Health

We all know the basic benefits of drinking water… in theory, anyway. But, even though we know that water is good for us, it is not always easy to get into the habit. It took me many years to start drinking water on its own. I was in my 30s already and all through my teens and 20s, I hated drinking water. Instead, I drank all sorts of unhealthy liquids instead. As I got into my 30s, I began to realise just how important water was to my overall health and well-being. Now, I always have a bottle of water by my side that is filled and refilled throughout the day.

5 Major Benefits of Drinking Water

Why exactly is water so important? Keep reading to find out some of the biggest benefits of drinking water.

The Biggest Benefits of Drinking Water

Hydration is essential for all living beings. Although some creatures get their liquids from the food they eat, humans and most animals need to drink water to survive. Technically, all liquids count as hydration. Unlike sugary drinks, tea, coffee, and even juice, water contains no other ingredients. It is pure H2O, hydrating you without any potential side effects. Some of the most essential benefits of drinking water include the following:

    1/ Hydrates the skin.

If you are not getting enough water in your diet each day, your skin will soon feel the difference. Water keeps the skin hydrated, helping to prevent dryness, and keep the skin looking and feeling plump and healthy. Although a good skincare routine also helps the skin, drinking sufficient water over the course of each day is still essential.

2/ Maintains the body’s own fluids.

Water helps the body to regulate its own fluids. This allows the body to release toxins through sweat. During the hot summer months, staying hydrated is especially important. When the body is not able to release fluids through the pores, there can be complications ranging from kidney problems to various other issues.

    3/ Keeps joints lubricated.

Joints need to be hydrated to stay lubricated. Water helps to keep joints moving easily, ensuring that joint health is maintained. Water also helps muscles stay lubricated. Whether you exercise often or not, healthy joints are vital to prevent injury and keep your bones in good shape for as long as possible.

4/ Delivers oxygen to the body.

The body needs oxygen to maintain its blood flow. When there is not enough oxygen in the bloodstream, numerous problems can arise. Water helps to deliver oxygen, keeping your entire body healthy and strong and supporting your blood flow for optimal, long-term health and well-being.

    5/ Aids the digestive system.

Finally, another major benefit of water is that it helps to keep the digestive system running smoothing. Water can help with constipation and other bowel issues such as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Speaking from my own experience as someone who has IBS, regular water really does make a difference.

    Benefits of Drinking Water

If you are not wild about the taste of water, you can try adding lemon or even cut up fruit to the water. Berries, cucumber, mint, orange slices, and ginger can all add subtle flavour. However you enjoy your water, make sure that you get at least eight glasses a day to see the full benefits of drinking water.
