Designed to help you ease into sleep, a good nighttime diffuser blend can be surprisingly helpful. For many years, I used an oil burner before I learned that diffusers were a lot safer (and easier). I don’t use my diffuser nearly as much as I could but I still enjoy making a calming blend of essential oils for bedtime.
Diffusers work by heating up essential oil and water electrically. As the oil-infused water heats, it releases gentle fragrance throughout the room. These awesome gadgets can be set to diffuse oil for a set amount of time. They can also be left overnight safely (provided it sits somewhere out of reach of small children and pets). Many have lights for added ambience.

Relaxing Nighttime Diffuser Blend Ideas
I am a massive fan of lavender essential oil. In my youth, I used to think of lavender as a boring herb that smelled a bit like toilet spray. As I grew up, I began to love the small. I also began to see just how many healing properties this oil can offer – whether added topically to the skin or inhaled through a diffuser or facial steam.
Now, I include lavender in my bedtime steam every single night just before I get into bed for my final meditation. There is something hugely soothing about this oil that helps my sinuses while it makes me feel relaxed.
Some of my favourite nighttime diffuser blends include the following:
- Lavender and frankincense. Great for sleep (and smells heavenly, too).
- Lavender and orange. Good overall mood enhancer.
- Lavender and cedarwood. Great during cooler weather.
- Lavender and rose. Smells absolutely incredible.
- Chamomile. Just on its own, this oil is always a winner.
- Rosemary and orange. Calming and soothing.
- Geranium and rose. Another divine smelling combination.
For best results, remember to look for pure quality oils. It’s also a good idea to avoid stimulating oils at bedtime, including mint, peppermint, bergamot or any other oil that could keep you awake.
